The Traveler Wore A Hat
A brief sketch of the traveler, David W. Wilson.
A native of the Missouri Ozark's, David has always been drawn to the string, whether on guitars, mandolins, fiddles, mountain dulcimer, clawhammer banjo, ukulele, resonator, pedal steel and slide, basses, piano, and assorted percussion and jawharp. He does not blow any horns but he can skip a rock better than most hillbillies.
David has performed and recorded bluegrass, old time, classical, swing, country and folk rock. He's a quirky, yet engaging songwriter.
A few feathers in his hat;
- David has produced over 50 recording projects and played on over 300 records. Some of those artists are: Gary and Les Gallier (both are National Mountain Dulcimer Champs), Ilace Mears (2015 National Hammer Dulcimer Champ), Kentucky Standard Band, Dr. Bob Burbee, Marideth Sisco & Blackberry Winter, The Undergrass Boys, Radio Flyer Bluegrass, Songstress Anne McFie, Green Valley Grass, Harps For The Heart, Beyond Reach (with two founding members of The Ozark Mountain Daredevils, Larry Lee and Randle Chowning), Mary Alexander and hundreds more.
- David was a member of Radio Flyer, first place winner of "Best New Bluegrass Band In America" in 1985 at the KFC / Louisville, Ky. band competition, beating the group Alison Krauss was a member of (she was 14).
- David contributed to the soundtrack and appeared in the film "Chrystal" with Billy Bob Thornton and Harry Dean Stanton. He also contributed songs on the Debra Granik film "Stray Dogs". (She directed "Winter's Bone"). David's favorite film experience was playing Pa's (Charles Ingalls) actual fiddle for a Laura Ingalls Wilder documentary.
- David is a teacher at music camps and festival workshops all over the country.
- David was the 2023 1st place winner of the Walnut Valley Festival National Mountain Dulcimer Championship in Winfield, Kansas. He placed third in 2021 and totally played awful and blew it in 2022.
- Another odd hat David wears: he has re-haired and restored violin bows for nearly 40 years... ain't that peculiar.
David and his lovely wife, Julie, live in Springfield, Missouri. They both love floating and hiking and discovering off the beaten path towns and villages.
Wearing all those hats keeps David recording, performing, teaching, writing, repairing and adventuring with Julie.
